From playful pups to snuggly cats and everything in between, these pets are waiting for someone like you to give them the love they deserve! This week, we introduce Layla from Ladybird Animal Sanctuary.

Layla ended up at Hamilton Animal Services as a stray. Shelter staff called the owner who was listed on Layla's microchip. Apparently this owner had Layla as a "shop dog" for approximately eight years, and they recently gave her away before moving out of the country. The owner also told the shelter staff that Layla had a litter of puppies a year or so ago, and that they sold all the puppies. 

The owner gave the shelter staff the phone number of the person they gave Layla to, and when the shelter called that person, they denied owning Layla and said they have no idea who the owner was. Tough to know who is lying in this situation, but after an extended stray time, nobody came to claim Layla. The shelter had planned to put Layla up for adoption because she's super sweet, but when they did blood work, it came back as positive for heartworm and Lyme Disease. Because of this, Layla can't be spayed right away and she will have to go through treatment which generally takes about three months. The shelter wasn't able to hold onto her for that long, so they asked if we could help. Thankfully, we had a foster home step up to take in this sweet, sweet dog.

Layla had a vet visit on her rescue day and a more comprehensive blood test was done to confirm the heartworm and Lyme Disease. Those tests came back postiive for both, so she has been started on the medications to treat them. Layla is nothing but happy. She loves absolutely everyone she meets and she shows her love with her big smile and wiggly bum tail wags. She's a very special girl and we're so glad we were able to help her. Once she's done her treatment and is healed from her spay surgery, Layla will be available for adoption.
