Saturday 05 April 2025
Preceding Day Saturday 05 April 2025 Following Day
  • Poetry Contest - Haldimand Library

Haldimand County Public Library invites the community to get creative and participate in its 12th Annual April Poetry Contest.

This year's theme is "Family." Submitted poems should explore the importance of family, what family means to the writer, or a specific aspect of family life, such as love, birth, or loss. To showcase the diverse meaning of family, poems can also illustrate different emotional bonds with non-relatives, such as pets, friends, or caregivers.

Poems can be submitted online through the Library's website or in person at any library branch from April 1 to 30. Each poem that meets the contest criteria will have a chance to win a cash prize in one of the following categories:

    • Primary - Kindergarten to Grade 3
    • Junior - Grade 4 to Grade 6
    • Intermediate - Grade 7 to Grade 10
    • Senior - Grade 11 to Grade 12
    • Adult - Ages 18 and up

Judging will take place at the beginning of May, and cash prizes will be awarded to the first, second, and third-place winners in each category. The first prize will be $50, the second prize $35, and the third prize $20. Winners will be announced in mid-May, and an awards ceremony will follow.

The prizes for the April Poetry Contest have been generously sponsored by The Friends of the Dunnville Library, The Friends of the Jarvis Library, and The Friends of the Caledonia Library.

For more information on contest rules and submission details, visit haldimandlibrary.ca/poetrycontest.

  • Haldimand Horticultural Society’s Seed and Garden Show

    Thinking about spring?

The Haldimand Horticultural Society is holding a seed and garden show on April 5 from 9 to 2 at the Riverside Exhibition Centre in Caledonia.

This is not their annual Seedy Saturday anymore…Haldimand Horticultural Society has turned it into one of the largest seed and garden shows in Ontario with something for everyone – kids included.

There will be a free seed exchange table, 60+ vendors, demonstrations, games, draws, free handouts, a kid’s corner, and a café along with an arborist to answer any tree related questions.

The vendors have expanded from simply seed and garden-related vendors to include vendors with an outdoor living /patio/backyard slant as well.

A great example of such a vendor is Foret Mushrooms. This is a woman-owned company from Cambridge Ont. that would be invaluable to anyone wishing to learn about mushroom foraging on a guided hike, enjoy nature retreats or purchase mushroom products.

The Canadian Peony Society will have a booth there this year and will be available to discuss all things peony.

The Canadian Wildlife Federation will also be at this event.

There will also be two guest speakers at the show: Paul Oliver on “How to Attract Wild Birds to Your Backyard” and the Fancy Farmerettes on “Growing with Hemp.”

Turn your gardening thoughts into reality this spring with a visit to the Haldimand Horticultural Society seed and garden show.
